Notes
Evolving in the severe coastal extreme of the Atacama Desert where measurable rainfall is practically non-existent, this species survives almost entirely by capturing moisture from the dense camanchaca sea fogs. In a coastal Zone 10b environment, maintaining this extreme aridity is critical to prevent bloating and basal rot. It demands a highly aerated, fast-draining mineral substrate, making your preferred gritty 80% premium pumice blend perfectly suited to mimic the sterile coastal scree of Cifuncho. Cultivating this slow-growing specimen in a hand-crafted, breathable raw cement pot ensures rapid evaporation and crucial root aeration. It requires extreme discipline with watering—often going weeks or months between deep soakings during the active season—and demands a strictly bone-dry winter dormancy. To protect the root system from unexpected cold, stagnant winter rains, housing it permanently under your solid polycarbonate greenhouse roof is absolutely essential.
Origin
Chile. This taxon is widely considered a specific geographical form or synonym of Copiapoa serpentisulcata. It is found exclusively in the hyper-arid coastal terraces of the Antofagasta Region, heavily concentrated around the bay of Cifuncho and stretching south toward Esmeralda. In its desolate native habitat, it forms dense, rugged mounds of globose to short-columnar stems. The plant is characterized by its heavily ribbed, greenish-brown to greyish epidermis, often featuring distinctively wavy or serpentine furrows between the ribs. It is fiercely armed with thick, rigid spines that emerge brownish or amber before weathering to an ashy grey. Like its close coastal relatives, mature heads develop a dense apical cushion of protective wool from which small, satiny pale yellow flowers emerge during the warm season.
